The 4Runner is plenty capable without a locker. I’ve been many places that I couldn’t believe I made it let alone didn’t spin tires and even seem challenging. That being said, I’ve recently had a rear locker installed and it’s awesome.A couple years ago I threw an Aussie Locker in my rear diff and it did make a difference. However it makes it easier if you're mechanically inclined and up for a challenge.
