Hard shift into reverse

I hauled out a moose and had power to all wheels, no grinding, no noise it just won't shift into reverse. I took off the shifter bracket assembly and tried turning the shift drum. Works fine low, high and neutral. You can feel it in the detents perfectly it just won`t go into reverse. It is like it will not go far enough..

For a few weeks now I have experienced a rough shift between 3rd and 4th. It is what I would call a slip or flare. I think that is the same thing. It ONLY does this when cold on the first shift from 3 to 4.I'm in gym for 2-2 1/2 hurs average. When I go to leave, I start car and let it sit for 10-30 seconds. I go to leave and shift out of park, it engages very hard. Hard enough that if I don't have the brakes on too hard,it will lurch forward! I checked fluid, it is dark. That can make it hard to shift out of park. You might check the parking brake to see if it holds the car when on a hill. If not, it needs to be adjusted. Turns out it was the thin metal rod between the bracket @370Dancer mentioned and the transmission. It was bent...guessing the vacuflush guy leaned while working back there. the rod slides into a sleeve on the engine side and since the rod was bent, when being pushed more deeply into the sleeve shifting into reverse, there was resistance to the bent rod being forced into the straight sleeve.Then this morning, as soon as I pulled out of my driveway, it started shifting hard 1-2, and 2-3.
