Re: GMRS vs CB Let me start by saying that I am a licensed amateur radio operator and LICENSED GMRS user. I also have used 27 MHz CB and I perform communications functions (radio installs, antenna maintenance, radio programming, radio training) at my job at the fire dept. The GMRS rules allow for 50 watts input power on the 8 GMRS frequencies.GMRS offers higher wattage and better range than CB radios (max 4 watts), and, like CB, the GMRS system is channelized with a total of 30 channels (pre-defined frequencies) assigned to it. Channels 1-7 are limited to a maximum effective radiated power (ERP) of 5 watts, channels 8-14, which are limited to handheld radios, have a max ERP of 0.5 ...GMRS seems to offer more "private" use with the multitude of privacy codes. How does the range compare on something like Midland MXT400VP3 to a CB radio on SSB pushing 12 watts? Particularly in the terrain mentioned above. Is one wave better at penetrating blocking terrain than the other, or is wattage king (40 vs. 12) in this situation?

Aug 4, 2023. #3. As someone else said in another thread, GMRS/FRS use is different from CB in that the devices have CTCSS/DCS to isolate the experience. A lot of the FRS devices come with codes already set. In the CB world everyone within your general vicinity was part of the conversation. The difference is that GMRS radios have designated channels within those frequencies that aren't available to FRS radios. Its use is covered by FCC Part 95, but ...MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service) and FRS (Family Radio Service) are two types of walkie-talkie radios that operate on different frequency ranges. The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) incorporates several radio services as spelled out in 47 CFR Part 95: FRS (95.191) R/C (95.201) CB (95.4) MURS (95.632)...and a few others. Basic 40-channel CB is and has been an integral part of Part 95. Don't confuse "GMRS" with FRS or MURS. The latter two are separate entities under GMRS.So my other options are things like MURS, GMRS/FRS, and CB. all of those are viable. murs and cb are entirely unlicensed. but you are limited to 2 watts on murs, and 4 watts for cb. cb's frequency doesn't penetrate particularly well, murs is better in that respect, but in either case the power limits are a hindrance.
Probably a compromise would be a GMRS radio that would also do FRS and forget the CB channels. Some GMRS radios will also do weather. That said, I use a HAM Yaesu VX-5 handheld on my bike. I have modified it so I can get HAM, FRS, GMRS, Weather and stereo FM.
