Brakes seem to be working fine for a few minutes then for unknown reason lockup while driving, not just after braking. Have to release the pressure to get the brakes to release. I bought the conversion kit from JT Outfitters and I have thoroughly ...5472 posts · Joined 2000. #11 · Sep 30, 2014 (Edited) Swapping out the front knuckles from either a late model FJ40 front axle, a straight axled Hilux or a Sixty Series Land Cruiser will allow for using Toyota calipers and rotors. The rear axle is commonly swapped out with an opened up GM 1/2 ton rotor and GM Metric calipers.

I just bought a '72 FJ40 and realized that three out the four (drum) brake cylinder's are seized and one of the grease seals is leaking bad. Since I have to replace the brake cylinder's, I am wondering if I should, instead, take the money that I would have spent on the new cylinder's and use it towards a disc brake conversion. Disc's are applying forse in a whole different direction. The drums are just applying equal but opposite forse to an imoveable object (drum). There is no rotational force.The two also bolt together with (2) 8 or 10mm bolts. 81-85 minitrucks use longer studs that go through the rotor and hub, sandwiching the two together. I sent the following email to SOR tech, and got a nebulous answer with no good advice. "I am running an early 69 FJ40, but with a 72 tub. Unless you are really against grinding the knuckle balls, I'd suggest going with the larger pattern birfields and knuckles off a mini truck, FJ60, or 78+ FJ40. Only additional complication is getting a shim for the steering arms so you can mate the larger pattern steering arms to the smaller FJ40 tie rods.Aug 7, 2008. #6. Well, I am finally getting ready to tackle the 45. Was curious what everyone did to convert their early-67 cruisers to disk brakes. Axle is no problem, but wondering about the booster. I have the Warden adapter for the old firewall, and will be putting in a 78-79 2F w/a Weber. Questions I have:I converted my '74 FJ40 to front discs ~13 years ago. Removed the residual valve in the front circuit of the drum brake master cylinder. Did not fit a proportioning valve to the rear brake circuit. No issues, worked great for ~6 years (then I upgraded to rear discs with the proportioning valve and and a 4wd mini-truck master cylinder.) Regards ... ….

Everything fits right but I cannot find the correct master cylinder. The 70-75 Mc doesn't work.
To explain, the prop valve does absolutely nothing under normal daily brake pressures. Stop and go etc. it lets these pressures by unregulated. It only kicks in and regulates the pressure under extreme braking. Like slamming on the brakes. Drum brakes lock up under high pressure situations much easier than disc.This kit was designed for use on 8/70 to 9/75 FJ40 or 55 (may work on early years but brake line fittings are different, 9 mm, and you will need a dual circuit hydraulic system). ...
