Under-hood & install parts. We all can agree that the 22R family of engines are bulletproof when maintained. One of the reasons why is that Toyota spent the time to engineer it with parts that actually last. We've seen most every version of the aftermarket parts available and 99% of the time, the OE part is still (by far) the best available.Feb 13, 2010. #2. The 22re is a good engine if you keep it close to stock. It's when you try and make power the reliability goes out the window. IMO they are costly to build for the power and reliability you get. I just sold my 22rte (22re turbo) engine after destroying the third head and lce cam.The mods so far on my 1985 22R are: Thorley header with no cat, 2.5" inch to muffler (Autozone Cherry Bomb Turbo), 2" from muffler back, and Double-Gnarly air filter mod (stacked two stock filters). The Tri-Y header will definitely give you more power and torque!! In both my 1986, 22RE and my 1985, 22R, the DT header was very noticeable.
